That’s right, brownies made from black beans. I know it sounds a bit weird. Who puts beans in brownies? I don’t know what would make someone think of using black beans in a chocolaty dessert but it works. They’re so yummy and they’re actually good for you! My mom sent me this recipe about a week ago and I’ve already made it four times. I know anyone who likes chocolate desserts will love this one!
Ingredients:
1 19oz/540ml can black beans (drained & rinsed)
2 ripe bananas
1/4 cup cocoa
2-3 tbsp sugar or agave syrup (I only used 2 tbsp agave syrup)
1/2-1 tsp pure almond extract
1/4 cup chocolate chips (optional)
1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 325F
In a food processor combine beans, bananas, cocoa, sugar/syrup, & almond extract. Blend until smooth.
In a medium bowl, combine batter, chocolate chips, and walnuts and mix well.
Pour brownie batter into a lightly greased cake pan and bake for 1hr 15min.
Let cool completely before serving (trust me, it tastes so much better once it’s cooled and had time to firm up a bit)
ENJOY!

What size cake pan did you use? These look great!
I used a small pan, only 8″x7″. If I remember correctly, the brownies were about 1″ thick. I already ate them all so I can’t go back and measure
These look yum! Was it just a regular 15 oz can of black beans you used?
I used a 19oz/540ml can. I’ve updated recipe to include the size.
What size can of Black Beans?
I just need to doublecheck: The oven temperature is supposed to be 325 C? It sound really really hot! Especially considering the baking time. I’d like to try and make this, so I just want to make sure
Oh goodness, I can’t believe I goofed like that. It should be 325F. I hope nobody has made them and burnt them because of that. So sorry.
I’m in the UK where black beans are a lot harder to come by- what other type of bean would you say is best for making these? =)
Although I’ve never tried using any other type of bean I’ve read that when cooking, you can substitute appaloosa beans, calypso beans, or azuku beans in other recipes so they might work for this one.
